🗺 We are starting our regionalization journey

OVHcloud aims at providing the most robust infrastructure, allowing our customers to build highly available and resilient services and applications . Today, OVHcloud is taking a big step further, as it introduces the Region concept and support of Availability Zones. The first 3-AZ region is available today and is located in the Paris metropolitan area, in France. The first product to support 3 AZ is Baremetal, but more products such as Public Cloud instances or storage products will come soon. Also, OVHcloud will deploy new 3-AZ regions in other locations in the near future.

For more details about Region and AZ please read on below in the "Regionalization at OVHcloud" section.

Regionalization at OVHcloud

Regions

To ensure its global presence with best performance for his worldwide customers, OVHcloud runs several regions across the world. A Region is a physical location of the world comprised of one or several datacenters where OVHcloud services are hosted. OVHcloud regions are deployed in most areas of the world such as Europe, US, Canada and APAC and are all interconnected to the OVHcloud backbone network. To see the list of regions, please consult the table below.

There are currently 2 types of regions at OVHcloud :

  • Region 3-AZ : A region that has three availability zones which are fully independent and bring the ability to build multi-AZ applications design with a very low latency between AZs. The Paris region is the first 3-AZ region deployment . More 3-AZ regions will be launched in the future. For an overview of what is an availability zone, please read the next section.
  • Region 1-AZ  : A region that has one global availability zone but is fully redundant on Power, Network with a 2N+1 design spread across multiple datacenters, and hence provide a very high level of resiliency. OVHcloud runs several 1-AZ regions in the world (e.g. Roubaix, Gravelines, Frankfurt, Beauharnois etc).

Availability Zones

An availability zone (AZ) is a physically distinct set of one or more datacenter within one given region, and is designed to ensure higher availability and fault tolerance for cloud services and applications. Each AZ has its own independent & redundant power, cooling and network infrastructure, which prevents an entire region outage in the event of an infrastructure failure (electric, network, etc...).

While providing higher availability, AZs are also specifically designed to provide highly resilient connectivity and best latency between each AZ of a region.

3-AZ regions are comprised of three fully independent availability zones and can be depicted as follows:

Available OVHcloud Regions

We are introducing a new region naming convention for our regions and AZ. These new region names will gradually appear in products API, UI and website contents where relevant. The old naming (aka trigram, e.g. RBX, GRA...) will be gradually replaced by the new one.

Note : To not confuse our customers, historical regions still have the site trigram in their new name (e.g. for Roubaix : eu-west-rbx).

Region selection tips

Typically, a region should be selected the closest possible to its users. For example, a service with its user based in western Europe should choose a region based in western Europe. A service with worldwide availability should be spread across multiple regions of the world.

Customers desiring best of breed resilience should choose a 3-AZ Region and build a specific design based on multiple AZ.

FAQ

Do you plan open more 3-AZ regions in the future ?

Yes, stay tuned!

What are next products to benefit from 3-AZ regions ?

How regionalization will impact product experience ?

OVHcloud will gradually transition product experience to Region and AZ. Soon, more product lines will expose Region and AZ in their UI and API where relevant, as well in website and documentation contents.

During this transition OVHcloud will make sure all products remain operable without change neither in customer code nor in customer habits, notably by maintaining API compatibility, and keeping location trigrams (e.g. RBX) in the new experience (UI and API).

As of today, only the Baremetal product line and Additional IP supports the new region model and hence only those products exposes the new experience, but more products such as Public Cloud instances or storage products will come soon.
